Thanks for filling in th egaps with the engine as I said I spent a lot of Tim chatting with Tim about it but what you found all adds up and I am pleased it got sorted.
From what Vanny says it doesn't suprise me that the water pump had ben bodged up at some point in its life.

Just to let all those interested that I sold my silver 16 valve this week. I only got £410 for it which is lower than I really wanted but at least it went to an enthusiast! He is a guy called Marc who has owned 5 of them previously, must be a glutton for punishment, and who has used this forum before, I believe, so he may be in touch again?

Thanks for all your help and advice, I'll continue with using my economical diesel ZX for a while but will always harbour the hope than I can afford another BX some time in the future.
